MOBILE, Ala. — The sports and school communities in Southwest Alabama and Northwest Florida are mourning the death of Ben Conken, a former Cottage Hill Christian Academy athlete who died at the age of 20 following a battle with cancer.

Conken graduated from Cottage Hill Christian Academy in Mobile in 2024 and was preparing to continue his football career at the University of West Florida (UWF) after receiving a scholarship to join the Argos football program.

About a month after signing with UWF, Conken learned that he had cancer. His diagnosis began a difficult period of treatment that took him between Mobile and Houston, but his illness did not prevent him from remaining connected to the football program and the teammates who had become an important part of his life.
