The Raleigh, North Carolina, community is mourning the death of Frank Jeffrey Ballard, longtime owner of Hayes Barton Café & Dessertery, who passed away on August 19, 2026, at the age of 66. His death was confirmed in a published obituary and by local news reports.

Frank Ballard became a beloved figure in Raleigh’s Five Points community after opening Hayes Barton Café in 1998. Over the years, the restaurant became known not only for its food and hospitality but also for the welcoming presence Ballard brought to customers, neighbors, friends, and members of the local community.

His death followed a difficult period that began with an accident at his home in March that resulted in a spinal cord injury and required extensive care. According to WRAL, Ballard later died following complications from pneumonia.

Frank was also recognized for his support of veterans and the hospitality industry, causes that formed an important part of his community legacy. Those who knew him have described him as someone who consistently went above and beyond for friends, customers, and neighbors.

His passing has left a significant void among the many people who came to know him through Hayes Barton Café. His family, employees, longtime customers, and friends are now remembering a man whose generosity and commitment to his community extended well beyond his restaurant.

A reception for family and close friends is scheduled for Sunday, August 30, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Hayes Barton Café & Dessertery. An open reception for friends and neighbors will follow from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested support for Transitions Hospice, The Veterans Life Center, or Tunnel to Towers.

Frank Ballard’s legacy will live on through Hayes Barton Café, the people he supported, and the many relationships he built throughout his life. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, customers, and the wider Raleigh community.
