According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, Burns and a friend paddleboarded approximately half a mile offshore to a reef near the 3000 block of South A1A on August 14. They secured their boards and went snorkeling.

A strong current subsequently carried the two men away from their paddleboards. Burns’ friend reached shore and realized Burns was missing, prompting a 911 call. A sheriff’s helicopter located Burns in the water, and he was transported to Jupiter Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
